I'll be the first to admit...I do NOT have a green thumb. As a matter of fact I pretty much kill everything green and despise all things that go along with gardening...bugs, dirt, being out in the heat, you name it! :) But this summer something came over me and I decided to try and turn over a new leaf. I knew the kids would love learning about how things grow and watching the different phases of their life cycles, so I started a container garden. I loved it, cared for it, sprayed it with specially formulated organic insect repellent, researched on the internet for optimum lighting, watering and care conditions, watered and pruned it...I even hand picked pests off of it!! That was a real step for me!! lol! :) Now we are starting to reap the rewards. Every morning Ash gets up first thing, grabs her easter basket, and heads out onto the patio to see what is ripe for picking...
lately there has been a lot!! Tomatoes, red peppers, red and green grapes, strawberries, cilantro, basil...so exciting!!!
It's official, there's nothing quite like the taste of organic produce. I don't know what they do to the stuff at the store, but it just doesn't have near the flavor that this stuff does...it must be all the extra love. ;)
Next year we're hoping to add some nectarines, apples, satsuma mandarins, corn, spinach, and green beans. YUM!!!
Have a great weekend!!

When I ran across these a few weeks ago, I couldn't help but think--GENIUS!! They are super cute, aforadable, and you can make them in any shape or color. Your baby can have handmade clothes that are super cute and easy! It doesn't get better than that!
How about having the supplies on hand and making it baby shower activity? Let each of the guests create their own unique onesie for the mom to be.
I'm always looking for fun and unique gift ideas and I think these are perfect!! Just a warning though, if you show up with a couple of these at the next shower, be prepared to be invited to many more!!! ;)
Here is the tutorial and information on the few supplies you will need if you want to make some! :)
Have a great day!

I was looking around a few of my favorite blogs last night and stumbled upon this little gem of an idea over at Project Wedding. Didn't I tell you I love wedding sites??? ;)
If you've ever been to a little party of mine you know that I LOVE retro soda. It's way expensive a lot of times and totally frivilous but I LOVE the glass bottles, bright colors, and vintage labels. YUM!!! I definitely consider it a decoration. Around the holidays many of my favorite soda and juice makers (Jones, Boyer and Izze) create special flavors and colors just for that particular holiday. Jones make a candy corn for halloween and gingerbread for Christmas, Izze has special blackberry just for hallowen. So fun!!! So you can imagine my pure delight when I saw these images....
Yes, my heart did just skip a beat. ;) lol!
Imagine pairing them with these beauties...
you can find them here.
A couple of my favorite places to find sodas are Costco (cases of Izze bottles for reasonble prices), Cost Plus World Market (their selection varies by store), Target (great selection of Jones) and BevMo. They have a GREAT selection of TONS of sodas by the bottle or case in the back along one ofthe walls. It's great if you want a large variety because you can by them by the bottle. If you're looking for even more you can find a bunch at Beverages Direct This one is my favorite at BevMo:
It's hard to find, but if you love all things pineapple like I do, it is a MUST try. Waialua Soda Works definitely knows what they're doing when it comes to soda!! I just wish they were closer and I could try them all! :) Good news though, you can order them directly through their site linked above!
I think I feel a photo shoot coming with these fun colored sodas...hmmm...
Hope you're feeling inspired!!
Have a great day!

I am feeling inspired. It's been a while since I threw a little shindig and I'm kind of getting the hankering for one now...especially after seeing this over at Amorology Weddings. I secretly want to be a wedding/party planner when I grow up. ;) I LOVE looking at wedding blogs for inspiration. So many of the ideas can be transformed to everyday use-- it's great! Check out the photos from this turquoise and lemon drop inspired wedding and tell me you aren't in the mood to host a little garden party...
The color pallette was AMAZING!!!!
Love, love love the idea of the lemon drops holding up the place cards...SO cute!!!
Remember when I found these yummy vintage blue glasses at HG a few months ago??? Well, I'm thinking those combined with the millions of lemons from my parents backyard and we've got a party!!
Thanks for the inspiration Heather! If you're looking for some more great paty ideas check out Amorology Weddings.
Have a great day!

Have you ever had that friend or relative that went on a vacation and then came home with thousands of pictures and expected you to look through them and re-live their trip with them? Well, this week I am that friend. ;) lol!! I thought I'd share a few photos of our adventures last week...I promise to try and not bore you too much. :)
We started out on Saturday driving through Vegas heading to St. George, UT for a good old fashioned 4th. At first I wasn't too excited about spending most of my 4th of July in the car, but then I tried pitching it to the kids as a unique experience...what could be better than spending our nation's birthday driving across it and enjoying the beauty that it encompasses. We sang patriotic songs, talked about the colonies, the intolerable acts, the continental congress and read the declaration of independence. (thank goodness for the blackberry and internet service in the middle of nowhere!! ;))
Another fun surprise was a quick and fun vist with some really good family friends in Las Vegas. We were driving though kind of spur of the moment and gave them a call to meet us for lunch. That turned into a fun afternoon of swimming and chatting. :) We are so grateful for the wonderful friends we made in law school...really more like family if you ask me. You know the kind...friends you can go without speaking to or seeing for months and then just pick up right where you left off without missing a beat. We sure love these families and relish every moment we get to spend with them!
This kid cracks me up. I love how he insists on wearing his goggles..."but mom, they are more comfortable like this..." lol, a little funnier looking too, but while he's so little and cute we won't mention that! ;)
Thanks for a fun afternoon Allemans!!
After a nice break from the car (and some Cafe Rio) we headed to our final destination for the weekend...St. George Ut and the Inn at Entrada. For those of you that are HSM2 fans, you might recognize it as Lava Springs. Yes, we stayed at the resort where HSM2 was filmed in one of the casitas where the cast members lived during filming (insert teeny bopper squeal here). It was gorgeous!
It was incredibly fun and very reasonable. You stay in a casita that is roughly 2000 square feet with a full granite kitchen, laundry room, beautiful master bedroom and bath, great room, garage, and patio.
Here's the view from our "backyard"...this is a virtually unenhanced photo, just a little border on the edge...straight out of camera...yep, the colors in the early evening are really that gorgeous!
We spent a lot of time here...
kinda made us wonder what we were thinking heading out to a rustic cabin in the mountains shortly thereafter.... ;)
more to come.
have a great day!

Happy Birthday America!
I have been contemplating this great nation and the state of affairs a lot lately. I am not a particularly political person. I would much rather read US Weekly than the newspaper, :) but I am very patriotic. On this most patriotic of all days I thought I would share a few of my thoughts in hopes that moms and women who are busy with raising children, working, and caring for families and others might take a minute to think a little bit more about what's happening in our nation today and how it is affecting us and our posterity.
I am concerned about the freedoms and rights that we currently enjoy...that many of them are on the verge of being taken away from us. I keep hearing talk of our constitution being "out of date." I believe that the reason people are saying this is because their agendas are unconstitutional according to the current constitution. If you take the time to truly study the document itself, something I have been starting to do, you will find this to be true. In my humble opinion the constitution will NEVER be out of date. I believe that it is an inspired document ...one that has resulted in the greatest nation in history.
Senator Orrin Hatch said:
"the constitution is not out of date. It is no more out of date than the desire for peace, freedom and prosperity is out of date. The Founders were not custom building the Constitution for any particular age or economy. They were structuring a framework of government to fit the requirements of human nature. These do not change. What protected the freedom of George Washington will protect freedom for you and me."
The Founders wanted to create a government that was by the people and for the people...with enough government to protect us and maintain order, but not enough government to abuse the people. I am afraid we are heading toward the latter.
Thomas Jefferson wrote: "If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be."
"In spite of the blessing accrued to the average American, many hate this nation's form of government, and are dedicated to destroying it, while others are indifferent, apathetic, and could care less about its rapidly deteriorating condition." Ronald Mann, Deputy Director Commission on the Bicentennial of the United States Constitution
I believe that most of us fall into the category these days of "expecting to be ignorant and free." Many of us know more about what has happened in the life of Michael Jackson in the last week than what has happened in our nation ....important things that will impact all of lives and the lives of our children and grandchildren. Do you know THE FACTS about Cap and Trade? How about the taxation of health benefits? These are both VITAL bills that will hit you and your family directly in your pocketbook. Presidential candidate Barack Obama stated: "You know, when I was asked earlier about the issue of coal, uh, you know — under my plan of a cap-and-trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket." In the middle of a global economic crisis, why would we even think about trying to pass a bill that the Wall Street Journal says would be "the biggest tax in American history"? Maybe because many of our representatives that are voting on these types of bills stand to profit from them. Our Congressmen were handed a 1300 page document packed full of pork in the middle of the night last week and asked to vote on it the following day. No one knows what they are voting on, not our representatives, nor us. We are quickly headed down a slippery slope and no one is paying attention. I am guilty of the same, but today I am changing that. I LOVE this country and it is time that I start paying attention to what is going on around me and the laws and regulations that are being passed under my nose on a weekly basis. I want to know what's going on. I want to flood my senators' offices with call and emails. It's time to make them work for us. We need to tell them what we want and make them do it. And if they don't do it, we need to replace them with someone who will. But first, we need to KNOW what we want. It's time to wake up my fellow citizens. The days of sitting idly by are over. If we don't wake up and pay attention, we will be paying for it for a long time.
I am inspired to make a change on this most patriotic of days. I'm not trying to force my views on anyone...I mean you're reading this by choice, right? ;) I'm simply saying...no matter what you think you want...pay attention and actually learn about it and have a voice. Then, most importantly, contact those that have the vote and let THEM know what you want. Here's a link to ALL of our states' senators' info so it is easy for you to reach them...
Did you know that with each phone call or letter that they receive they assume that there are at least 1,000 other voters out there that feel the same way you do? Your time and energy really DOES make a difference. You carry the weight of 1,000!!!
Here are a few facts that I was reading the other day that I found inspiring...
-The US represents approximately 5% of the world's population, but has created more new wealth than all the rest of the world combined.
-Americans have been responsible for more discoveries and inventions in science and elsewhere than any nation on earth.
-The US has given more dollars in aid and relief than most of the world's nations combined.
Let's help lead this great nation into another century of progress, not of one of stagnation or, even worse, decline. Know what is going on in our country, educate yourself about it and have a voice. Study the constitution. Learn about your rights and how it protects you. I believe you too will come to know that it is truly inspired and will never be out of date.
God Bless America!!
Have a great Independence Day!

I was busy creating yesterday with a deadline that had come and gone...I had a SUPER FUN kit to work with this month from Coordinates Collections. The full kits are being revealed on the website today...but here's a sneak peek at some of the yummy things you can create with this kit:
SO for all you scrappers, here's one of my favorite easy tips to jazz up a layout with some glitter...take your diamond glaze with the needle nose tip and trace over some of the designs on the paper. If you want to use different colors, make sure that you only trace the ones you want to be red all at once then glitter, all blue at once then glitter etc. That helps to keep the glitter separate and easier to return the excess to your bottle. In the first layout I used this technique on a few of the words in red and green glitter, a few of the blue swirls and the orange around the three suns. It really makes a rather simple layout look like you spent hours! :)
Have a great day!

I LOVE the 4th of July!!! It's right up there with Christmas and Halloween as far as I'm concerned. Something about all that red, white and blue just makes me happy. What can be better than fireworks, the warm summer night, amazing food and celebrating our beautiful and awe inspiring country. I thought I'd get you started thinking in that direction since we only have a week left to prepare!! Here are some fun images and ideas for you...
They sell these fun beverage containers everywhere these days. Homegoods, Costco, Crate and Barrel, you name it. Fill them with Fruit Punch, Sprite and Blue Kool Aid and you automatically have a fun and festive and practical centerpiece!
I'll do a little tutorial on how to make something similar to these fun decorations later this week. SO easy!!!
You can find this great table runner at Social Couture.
** Money saving tip** Think of what you have around the house...do you have a fun red, white and blue quilt that can substitute as a table cloth for the day??
a couple more fun table ideas rom social couture...you can find the red and white striped popcorn bags and boxes at your local Cost Plus World Market. Love the simple idea of strawberries in white buckets with ribbon tied around.
**Money Saving Tip** Make your own "white buckets" with some inexpensive terra cotta pots that you paint white with a 99cent bottle of acrylic paint.
This banner is SO cute!!! Check out how to make it and a bunch of other great crafts with this 4th of July Crafts Tutorial from Country Living.
another super cute placecard idea from Country Living
and finally Martha. We must remember our party favors! Keep your guests cool on the warm summer night with these adorable DIY patriotic fans...
Here's the fan tutorial.
Hope this gets your creative juices flowing!! I'll be back with more fun ideas for the 4th later in the week!!
Have a great Monday!!

Well, no matter what you may have thought of him as a person you have to admit that MJ's music has played a role in your life...I mean, who doesn't know the words to most of his songs? :) It seems surreal that the king of pop is gone. His thriller album was the first record I ever owned...and still do, yep the original vinyl! This morning I was listening to the Today show and LA Reid said "let's turn down the chatter and turn up the music." Sounds like a good idea to me! RIP MJ.

Yesterday was a little bit of a crazy day in our house. We got to make a surprise visit to the dr.'s office. Poor little Ash was trying to get her cup from off the kitchen island. She stepped up onto one of the rungs on the bottom of a barstool and before she knew it her little toes slipped right off. She landed chin first on the seat of the stool. :( At first I thought it was a just a simple bitten tongue, until it kept bleeding and she kept screaming...then I realized she was bleeding from her chin too. She had bitten right through her lip!!!
Now, for those of you that know me, it is a miracle that I have two children...by c-section none the less! From the time I was little I have NOT handled anything having to do with the medical industry well. ;) I am still known at the Kaiser hospital in SD from the time I was 5 and had to get my "starting school" shots. After I sent the nurses on a mad dash to catch me it took 5 of them plus my mom to hold me down. :) My mom's reaction when she heard the news was...did you take someone to drive you to the doctor??? (knowing that I probably shouldn't have been driving in my condition..lol!! forget ash...i was the one experiencing major trauma! :) But seriously, I called the doctor, we ran over and fortunately she was chatting everyone up by the time we got there and the bleeding had stopped. One of her teeth just barely pierced the skin. Thank goodness!! If it had been any worse the day's adventures would have continued with a visit to the oral surgeon I was told. whew!!! Needless to say she is in a lot of pain and will have the worlds biggest canker sore until the wound heals, but we're just grateful we didn't lose any teeth or cause any scarring on that precious little face!!
Before the "incident" I snapped these shots of my little cutie...thank goodness!! These smiles will have to hold me over for a few days until I see some more from that little fat lipped girl!!
love you baby girl!!
have a great day!

In Orange County we aren't allowed to have backyards ;) but a girl can dream, right?
Does it get any cuter than that? I love the simplicity of it. Rattan mats for wall coverings, tree trunks for bedside tables, a couple of old palettes painted n a yummy shade of blue for the base of the daybed...all very DIY friendly. I love the idea that you can take a build it yourself shed from Lowe's or Home Depot and turn it in to something so beautiful. Who wouldn't want to come stay at you house??
Hope you're feeling inspired!
Have a great day!

The hello kitty mecca had been calling Ash's name for some time and on Saturday we finally took the trip. John was less than thrilled to set his three year old free in an entire store of girly, pink, WAY overpriced trinkets, but let's face it, you have to capitalize on these photo ops while you can. ;) When she's five she might not find the Sanrio store quite as exciting. :) Fortunately she's a pretty good shopper and while she enjoyed filling her arms with item after item, she was also perfectly happy to put them all back when asked. :) She was just happy to be there. :) (but yes, we did leave with a few things) :)
She had it in her sights from the minute we got on the escalator...
the minute we entered she was off... filling her little arms with all kinds of hello kitty goodness...
at least she was trying to be fiscally responsible by checking prices. ;)
she was careful to only grab necessities-- like a water bowl for the pet that we don't have
you would have thought she was on supermarket sweep. it was great. every little girl should have the chance to visit the hello kitt store once. if you're going to go, make sure you are prepared to shoot discreetly. Most of these were taken from the hip...literally. with no flash. i didn't see what I had captured until i got home. stores are not usually photography friendly. :)
Have a great day!

We are foodies. We LOVE to go out and explore restaurants. Thanks to my sister, we have a Zagat membership and we are religious readers of the travel bible... Frommer's. I thought on ocassion I would throw in a restaurant review here and there to let you know about some of our favorite places in the OC and new places that we find. SO, here's an oldie but goodie! :)
A few years ago we were introduced to this family favorite by some good friends. It's a little tucked away in an old house in downtown Laguna, just a little south of the intersection of Mermaid and Second, but it is worth hunting it down! If you love Mexican food, than this is a MUST try. Be sure to bring a few quarters to feed the meters.
Be prepared to mingle with the locals and make some new friends. Seating is TIGHT. Just four small tables outside and indoor seating that totals all of three barstools...but again, it's worth the standing room only!
They are known for their fish tacos, especially Salmon, but I'm not a Salmon lover so I LOVE the Halibut tacos...
The chicken tacos are YUMMY too...
Everyone I talked to, locals, visitors from Georgia, and a surfer from Costa Rica all raved about their food too. I think I'm going to have to try their avocado lime salad next time...that seemed to be a popular choice. Order yourself a lemonade to wash it all down...it is the best fresh sqeezed lemonade I've had in quite a while...no minute maid here!
With reasonable prices, a friendly casual atmosphere, and amazing food you should definitely give La Sirena Grill a try next time you're in the mood for Mexican. :) Maybe I'll see you there! :)
La Sirena Grill
